ABU NAMARA

New Delhi

Jantar Mantar turned today into a hotspot with slogans demanding justice for Babri Masjid and punishment to its demolishers. Three major groups of agitators simultaneously held rallies and public meetings in Delhi’s prescribed site for demonstrations, while joining many others throughout the country on the so-called ‘black day’. As usual, Bajrang Dal has also observed its ‘Shaurya Diwas’ with an un-matching crowd.

Amidst these activities, remembering the shameful demolition of Babari Masjid on 6 December 1992, news came that the Chennai high court has proscribed holding of such demonstrations in the city anymore, which might be interpreted by many as a blow to fundamental rights.

Over two dozen organizations including Lokraj Sanghathan, All Indian Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, Jamat-e-Islami Hind, Sikh Forum, National Christian Front, Communist Gadar Party, Citizens for Democracy, Indian National League, Muslim United Front, Nishant Natya Manch, Welfare Party of India, Social Democratic Party of India, etc have jointly organized a rally starting from Mandi House at 11 AM and finally culminating at Jantar Mantar into a public meeting addressed by leaders of the agitating organizations. The speakers’ main demands include expedition of the title suit of Babri Masjid pending in the apex court, due punishment to the executors of the criminal conspiracy of demolishing the historic mosque, restoring status quo by the Supreme Court which it ordered well before the tragic event, submission of Action Taken Report on the Report of the Justice Liberhan Commission, etc.

Another big demonstration on the occasion was organized by the Popular Front of India in which its national and state leaders and some guest speakers expressed views and demanded early punishment to the culprits who destroyed the mosque in the bright daylight and while disregarding all values of constitutional governance, democracy, secularism and the authority of the apex court.

A group of six communist parties have also held a separate demonstration at Jantar Mantar remembering the event to be a black spot in the history of Indian democracy.

Speakers in all these demonstrations shared many views. They remarked that the demolition of Babri Masjid was a well planned and meticulously executed destruction which was made possible by the calculated support of both the Congress government at the center and BJP government at Lucknow. They apprehended that with the formation of the BJP government presently at the center, the due process of justice is likely to be hampered. They were of the opinion that religious sentiments of common men are being exploited by political parties for the vested interests including the issue of Babri Masjid and if remained unchecked it would prove devastating for the whole country.

It may be noted that 8 organizations which demonstrated at Jantar Mantar have their offices in Okhla area where another political organization All Indian Majlis Ittehadul Muslimin has held local programs. Moreover, the local unit of Indian National League has also held a public meeting in Shaheen Bagh to commemorate the event.
